Understanding EN 1522 and EN 1063: Ballistic and Blast Standards Explained

Certification standards are often quoted but rarely explained. EN 1522 governs bullet-resistant building products, while EN 1063 covers bullet-resistant glazing. Understanding what each classification actually tests helps clients evaluate any proposal with confidence.

EN 1522 — Structural Elements

This standard defines resistance classes (FB1 through FB7) based on firearm caliber, velocity, and number of impacts a panel must withstand without penetration.

EN 1063 — Glazing

Glazing is tested independently since it fails differently than solid panels — spall behavior on the protected side is a critical part of the classification.
